Three trips, three seasons, one unforgettable road-tripping cat. Returning to Joshua Tree throughout the year revealed new birds, wildlife, wildflowers, and a deeper appreciation for one of California's most remarkable landscapes.

The Salton Sea is one of the West's most remarkable birding destinations, where desert landscapes, enormous flocks, and ongoing conservation efforts make every visit memorable.

A spring camping trip to Joshua Tree National Park turned into one of my favorite days of desert birding, with Gambel's Quail, Verdins, Phainopeplas, Black-tailed Gnatcatchers, Costa's Hummingbirds, and plenty of other memorable wildlife encounters.

On our way out to camp in Joshua Tree, we made a quick stop to hike around the Big Morongo Canyon Preserve and see if any fall migration birds were hanging out in the area. It’s clear this is a “birder’s park”, so we’ll definitely be returning to see what else we can see here!

When every campground in Joshua Tree was full, we turned an unexpected setback into one of our favorite backcountry camping experiences in the park.
