Who Likes Birds?
I'm Andrea. Photography came long before the birds did. I spent years shooting events and news, and I've always kept a camera around with whatever I am doing. I met my wife Kim, also a photographer, and we started documenting our trips together. This site grew out of a project of ours called Wandering Always, so you'll still run into some of her photos and writing in the archives.
Birds took over in 2019 and haven't let go since. These days it's birds, butterflies, wildflowers, and a camera, mostly in that order. I shoot Sony now but still load a roll of film when I feel like slowing down.
I'm not much of a lister, but I do keep a “life list”. I'd rather watch a Snowy Plover run along the beach to catch a bug to eat than add another line to my list. That's part of why I volunteer with California State Parks monitoring Western Snowy Plovers and California Least Terns, help Irvine Ranch Conservancy with butterfly surveys, and show up for bird surveys at Fairview Park and Randall Preserve in Costa Mesa. I like being out with the birds enough to learn their behaviors and get to know them better.
Kim and I are based in Southern California and are outside as much as we can be. When I'm not out with a camera, I'm probably watching the Dodgers, reading, or making coffee.
Come along if any of that sounds like your kind of thing!
