Camping in Idyllwild: A Peaceful Weekend at Fern Basin Campground
Some places make you want to slow down the moment you arrive, and Idyllwild is one of them. Surrounded by pine forests and granite peaks, this small mountain town has a relaxed pace that's hard to find elsewhere in Southern California. Between the hiking trails, local shops, and cool mountain air, it didn't take us long to understand why so many people fall in love with it.
Kim spent part of her childhood in Idyllwild, so after we moved to California, we knew we'd eventually make our way up the mountain. We first visited for a day hike from Humber Park and immediately fell in love with the forests, towering pines, and completely different landscape from what we were used to closer to home. It didn't take long before we came back, this time with camping gear.
Before heading to camp, we stopped at the San Jacinto Ranger Station to check current trail conditions and pick up a few local recommendations. It's a great place to ask questions before exploring the area, and the staff can provide the latest information on hiking permits, parking requirements, trail conditions, and fire restrictions. We decided to camp at Fern Basin Campground and immediately knew we'd picked a good spot. Our campsite sat beneath towering pines with plenty of space to spread out, a picnic table, a fire ring, and easy access to the campground's vault toilets. It felt quiet, peaceful, and comfortably tucked into the forest.
Our tent sat on a thick blanket of fallen pine needles that made the ground surprisingly comfortable. Between the cool mountain air and the sound of the breeze moving through the trees, it was one of the most relaxing nights of camping we'd had.
The only downside came the following morning. We quickly discovered that mountain flies are overly eager at welcoming first-time campers. We hadn't packed bug spray because we simply hadn't expected it, and breakfast quickly turned into a game of swatting tiny flying visitors. Ever since that trip, insect repellent has earned a permanent place in our camping gear. Fortunately, running into town wasn't difficult.
One of the best parts of camping near Idyllwild is that you're only a short drive from one of Southern California's most charming mountain towns. We headed into town for a hot breakfast at the local diner before wandering through the local shops. We browsed a candy shop, picked up a few treats, and enjoyed taking our time exploring before eventually heading home. If you're spending a weekend here, it's worth setting aside a little time to enjoy the town itself rather than only using it as a stop on the way to the trailhead.

Looking back, this weekend reminded us why we enjoy mountain camping so much. The peaceful forest, cool evenings, nearby hiking trails, and welcoming town all combined into a trip we've happily recommended ever since. Whenever we're looking for a relaxing weekend in the mountains, Idyllwild is still one of the first places that comes to mind.
